The Cross Timbers is a complex mosaic of woodlands and grasslands that form a broad ecotone between the eastern deciduous forests and the grasslands of the southern Great Plains; covering about 26,000 square miles. East and West Cross Timbers couch the Fort Worth Prairie on the east and west. Although they both have sandy soil foundations, they are noticeably different.
The East Cross Timbers is a narrow strip of dense post oak/blackjack oak woods that follow I-35 between the Blackland Prairie to the east and the Fort Worth Prairie to the west. In pre-settlement times, it was so dense with underbrush ... Read More

The Fort Worth Prairieβs Cretaceous geology erodes into unique bench and seep topography that creates habitat for many native endemic plants that exist nowhere else in the world.
On the rocky, dry benches and hilltops known as barrens, drought-tolerant plants such as pale yucca (Yucca pallida), white rosinweed (Silphium albiflorum) and Engelmannβs sage (Salvia engelmannii) are found.
In the seeps, endemic plants such as seep muhly (Muhlenbergia reverchonii) and limestone spike-rush (Eleocharis occulta) are adapted to extreme wet and dry conditions. At the base of each bench lays deeper soils that host tallgrass prairie habitat.
Palle yucca is found nowhere else in ... Read More

Fort Worth sits at a unique crossroads of several large ecosystems: Fort Worth Prairie and the East and West Cross Timbers. As annual rainfall diminished east to west, forests transition into woodlands, then savannas and prairies. In Fort Worth, these ecosystems grade into one another over a short distance and host distinct vegetation communities based upon soil. The Fort Worth Prairie is characterized by limestone soils while the Cross ... Read More

When we experience high amounts of rain, there is a chance for area lakes to exceed their maximum levels and force closures; including the closing of the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge canoe launch site. In an attempt to keep you better informed of the canoe launch availability, we have provided a link that will take the guessing game away. If Lake Worth’s water level is greater or equal to 595.00′ MSL, our launch site will remain closed until this level drops below 595.00′ MSL. Furthermore, any canoeing/kayak program sponsored by the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge will ... Read More
